investors rotating toward Anthropic-aligned hyperscalers are effectively making a concentrated bet on one relationship

Going from $9 billion to $30 billion annualized in roughly two quarters is not normal startup growth. It suggests enterprise AI adoption is not as nascent as the cautious takes implied a year ago. That said, $900 billion requires the company to not only sustain that trajectory but dramatically expand it — and to eventually generate margins that justify the multiple.

The Cerebras IPO is the more immediate stress test. It priced into a market already digesting hot inflation prints and a 30-year Treasury auction at 5%. If it holds and trades toward its marketed range, it clears the runway for Spacex, OpenAI, and potentially Anthropic to access public markets. If it cracks, that pipeline slows. Investors already holding Nvidia and the hyperscalers are being asked to add more AI exposure at higher valuations. At some point, incrementally positive AI news stops moving prices because it’s already priced in. The Cerebras open is the first real data point on where that ceiling sits.

Related Stocks: $CBRS, $AMZN, $NVDA, $MSFT, $GOOGL, $META, $SPCE, $OPEN, $TSLA

Improving financial outcomes by boosting financial literacy.

If you enjoyed this newsletter…

Refer a friend.

Or a family member—or even a stranger—as long as they open up our emails and keep us out of their spam folder.

Share Open Fieldbook

But wait! semiconductor companies record those same transactions as revenue and profit — one dollar, two income statements, two completely different stories

Cantor Fitzgerald’s Eric Johnston put it this way: net income to GDP at 9% is 50% above any prior peak. The earnings algorithm works right now — hyperscalers are committing over a trillion dollars in capex next year, so semiconductor revenue keeps flowing. But free cash flow relative to net income has compressed to roughly 65%, meaning there’s nearly a trillion-dollar gap between what companies are reporting and what they’re generating in cash.

CFRA’s Angelo Zino pointed out that excitement in the space has become heavily concentrated — anyone overexposed to the wrong partner faces asymmetric downside if the capex cycle flattens. The semiconductor index is the most stretched above its 200-day moving average since the dot-com bubble; and the margin for error on the earnings story is shrinking. When hyperscalers stop booking record capex — even for legitimate reasons like digesting capacity — the semiconductor income statement changes character fast. The market is treating these earnings as durable. The cash flow says they’re borrowed.

Related Stocks: $NVDA, $AVGO, $AMD, $TSM, $INTC, $QCOM, $MU, $MSFT, $GOOGL, $AMZN

Improving financial outcomes by boosting financial literacy.

If you enjoyed this newsletter…

Refer a friend.

Or a family member—or even a stranger—as long as they open up our emails and keep us out of their spam folder.

Share Open Fieldbook

But wait! So far the market has absorbed it — there’s cash on the sideline hunting for yield. But that math changes if 10-year yields push toward 5%. At that point the relative value argument for corporate debt weakens, spreads widen, and the cost of funding the AI buildout increases. JPMorgan’s Paul Quinsee described the current bond environment as moving from “extremely low to normal/typical levels”.

Hyperscalers buy chips and book them as expenses, pressing down on near-term earnings while building productive assets. Semiconductor companies receive that same spending as profit. The market decided to believe the semiconductor earnings and look through the hyperscaler capex drag. When it stops doing that — when capex flatlining becomes the headline — the reversal could be fast. The 30-year Treasury just cleared a 5% coupon for the first time since 2007. Today’s hyperscalers — Microsoft Alphabet, Amazon — are generating enormous cash flows and booking Cisco equipment as a cost of expanding those cash flows. Different buyer quality entirely.

What’s notable about the AI order revision is the pace. Going from $5 billion to $9 billion in a single quarter is a step-change in how hyperscalers think about network capacity. Every GPU cluster needs connectivity. As cluster sizes scale toward larger and larger training runs, network density requirements scale with them. Cisco sat in the right place at the right time, but it also spent years quietly repositioning toward this moment. — energy costs bleeding into services, the category the Fed watches most closely. Core PCE is actually rising faster than CPI, so no matter how you slice the data, this isn’t the scenario the Fed wants. Energy spikes are supposed to be self-correcting. Core stickiness is not.

Lower-income workers saw wage growth of just 1.5% while their gas spending has nearly doubled as a share of wallet — from roughly 5% to close to 10%. The Fed targets an aggregate inflation rate. The consumer living it is experiencing something sharper. If the Fed holds rates to protect the economy’s strength, the inflation psychology — what Stifel’s Lindsey Piegza called the risk of prices “becoming ingrained” — starts doing its own damage. The next two CPI and PPI prints before the June 17 FOMC meeting will tell us whether this is a spike or a regime change. Right now, the bond market is leaning toward the latter: a full rate hike is being priced in by April 2027.

Related stocks: $XOM, $CVX, $UAL, $DAL, $KR, $WMT, $COST, $JPM, $GS, $CAT
